Ernest John “EJ” Obiena of the Philippines has picked up another international medal, continuing his medal-winning performances in the current pole vault season.

Fresh from his spectacular gold-winning high jump, besting Olympic medalists just a couple of days before in the 9th Ostrava Golden Spike tilt held in the Czech Republic, Obiena picked up the bronze at the Poznań Athletics Grand Prix in Poland on September 11, 2020.

The Philippines’ first Tokyo Olympics Qualifier cleared 5.52 meters to tie for third place with Matt Ludwig of the USA, behind the host country’s Piotr Lisek who jumped 5.72m and Robert Sobera with 5.62m.

Obiena was upbeat after the competition, updating followers in social media with his medal run:

“Happy but realizing that I need to work harder. See you in the next competitions!”

EJ Obiena is continuing his training while competing and is scheduled to be in Rome on September 17 for the Rome Diamond League and at the Doha Diamond League on September 24.

His other medals in the ongoing competition season include his “Finest Pole Vaulter in the World” silver medal, a silver at Italy’s Triveneto Meeting, and his bronze medal finish at the Diamond League in Monaco – the Philippines’ first-ever medal at the elite league.
